Sound Design Theory and Practice Working with SoundSound Design Theory and Practiceis a comprehensive and accessible guide to the concepts which underpin the creative decisions that inform the creation of sound design. A fundamental problem facing anyone wishing to practice, study, teach or research about sound is the lack of a theoretical language to describe the way sound is used and a comprehensive and rigorous overarching framework that describes all forms of sound. With the recent growth of interest in sound studies, there is an urgent need to provide scholarly resources that can be used to inform both the practice and analysis of sound. Using a range of examples from classic and contemporary cinema, television and games this book provides a thorough theoretical foundation for the artistic practice of sound design, which is too frequently seen as a 'technical' or secondary part of the production process. Engaging with practices in film, television and other digital media, Sound Design Theory and Practiceprovides a set of tools for systematic analysis of sound for both practitioners and scholars. >Sound Design Theory and Practiceprovides a set of tools for systematic analysis of sound for both practitioners and scholars.ISBN 10: 1138125407ISBN 13: 9781138125407
Stabilizing an Unstable Economy“Mr. Minsky long argued markets were crisis prone. His 'moment' has arrived.” -The Wall Street JournalIn his seminal work, Minsky presents his groundbreaking financial theory of investment, one that is startlingly relevant today. He explains why the American economy has experienced periods of debilitating inflation, rising unemployment, and marked slowdowns-and why the economy is now undergoing a credit crisis that he foresaw. Stabilizing an Unstable Economy covers: The natural inclination of complex, capitalist economies toward instability Booms and busts as unavoidable results of high-risk lending practices “Speculative finance” and its effect on investment and asset prices Government's role in bolstering consumption during times of high unemployment The need to increase Federal Reserve oversight of banksHenry Kaufman, president, Henry Kaufman & Company, Inc., places Minsky's prescient ideas in the context of today's financial markets and institutions in a fascinating new preface. Two of Minsky's colleagues, Dimitri B. Papadimitriou, Ph.D. and president, The Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, and L. Randall Wray, Ph.D. and a senior scholar at the Institute, also weigh in on Minsky's present relevance in today's economic scene in a new introduction.A surge of interest in and respect for Hyman Minsky's ideas pervades Wall Street, as top economic thinkers and financial writers have started using the phrase “Minsky moment” to describe America's turbulent economy. There has never been a more appropriate time to read this classic of economic theory.ISBN 10: 0071592997ISBN 13: 9780071592994
Strategic Human Resource ManagementThis innovative text applies a systems theory perspective to strategic human resource management, drawing particularly on the Viable System Model and soft systems methodology.Readers are introduced to different ways of thinking about systems and shown how systems can interact, triggering changes in the competitive environment – and how HR systems can either facilitate or inhibit adaptation to these changes. Peppered with international examples throughout, this book considers key HR topics such as recruitment, reward, employment relations, culture, diversity and leadership, all through a systems lens. It shows how an understanding of system dynamics can help managers to recognise complexity, accept the inevitability of short-term systemic conflicts and anticipate the likely consequences. This text will be suitable for upper-level undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA students of strategic HRM, HRM and strategic management. It will also be thought-provoking for HR professionals looking to embrace a strategic role in their organizations.ISBN 10: 1138641367ISBN 13: 9781138641365
Stream Ecology: Structure and Function of Running WatersStream Ecology: Structure and Function of Running Waters is designed to serve as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and as a reference source for specialists in stream ecology and related fields. This Third Edition is thoroughly updated and expanded to incorporate significant advances in our understanding of environmental factors, biological interactions, and ecosystem processes, and how these vary with hydrological, geomorphological, and landscape setting. The broad diversity of running waters – from torrential mountain brooks, to large, lowland rivers, to great river systems whose basins occupy sub-continents – makes river ecosystems appear overwhelming complex. A central theme of this book is that although the settings are often unique, the processes at work in running waters are general and increasingly well understood.Even as our scientific understanding of stream ecosystems rapidly advances, the pressures arising from diverse humanactivities continue to threaten the health of rivers worldwide. This book presents vital new findings concerning human impacts, and the advances in pollution control, flow management, restoration, and conservation planning that point to practical solutions.Reviews of the first edition:".. an unusually lucid and judicious reassessment of the state of stream ecology"Science Magazine"..provides an excellent introduction to the area for advanced undergraduates and graduate students…" Limnology & Oceanography"… a valuable reference for all those interested in the ecology of running waters." Transactions of the American Fisheries SocietyReviews of the second edition:"Overall, a must for the field centre and a good starter text in stream ecology." (TEN News, October, 2007)"Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty." (P. R. Pinet, CHOICE, Vol. 45 (7), 2008)"... a very good, fluidly readable book which contains the latest key scientific knowledge of the ecology of running waters."
Surface Dyslexia: Neuropsychological and Cognitive Studies of Phonological Reading -Psychology Library Editions: Psychology of ReadingA child with developmental dyslexia or an adult with a reading disorder following brain damage might read the word shoe as ‘show’, why does this happen? Most current information processing models of reading distinguish between two alternative procedures for the pronunciation of a printed word. The difference between these concerns the level at which orthography is translated to phonology in one, the word-level procedure, a word is read aloud with reference to knowledge specific to that whole word. In the other, the sub-word-level procedure, a printed word is pronounced with reference to knowledge about smaller segments which occur in many different words. Both procedures contribute to normal skilled reading and its acquisition. But if one of the procedures is disrupted, then oral reading will be forced to rely on the alternative routine. Surface dyslexia is a general label for any disorder of reading which results from inadequate functioning of the word-level procedure and in consequence abnormal reliance on sub-word level translation from orthography to phonology.Originally published in 1985, this book provides new evidence about the diverse manifestations of surface dyslexia in adult neurological patients and in children with developmental disorders of reading. The data are drawn from speakers of a range of languages with distinct orthographies. Process models for the pronunciation of print are elaborated, and an appendix gives neurological information on the patients reported.ISBN 10: 1138091170ISBN 13: 9781138091177

Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of HopeTen years ago, bell hooks astonished readers with Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom. Now comes Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope - a powerful, visionary work that will enrich our teaching and our lives. Combining critical thinking about education with autobiographical narratives, hooks invites readers to extend the discourse of race, gender, class and nationality beyond the classroom into everyday situations of learning. bell hooks writes candidly about her own experiences. Teaching, she explains, can happen anywhere, any time - not just in college classrooms but in churches, in bookstores, in homes where people get together to share ideas that affect their daily lives. In Teaching Community bell hooks seeks to theorize from the place of the positive, looking at what works. Writing about struggles to end racism and white supremacy, she makes the useful point that "No one is born a racist. Everyone makes a choice." Teaching Community tells us how we can choose to end racism and create a beloved community. hooks looks at many issues-among them, spirituality in the classroom, white people looking to end racism, and erotic relationships between professors and students. Spirit, struggle, service, love, the ideals of shared knowledge and shared learning - these values motivate progressive social change.Teachers of vision know that democratic education can never be confined to a classroom. Teaching - so often undervalued in our society -- can be a joyous and inclusive activity. bell hooks shows the way. "When teachers teach with love, combining care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust, we are often able to enter the classroom and go straight to the heart of the matter, which is knowing what to do on any given day to create the best climate for learning."ISBN 10: 0415968178ISBN 13: 9780415968171
Teaching for Quality Learning at University"Biggs and Tang, now with Kennedy, have ensured this new edition remains an international leader for university teaching for the next decade."Denise Chalmers AM, Emeritus Professor, University of Western Australia, Australia"This book, a fifth edition, can truly be called a "classic" on the topic of teaching, learning and curriculum design in higher education."Michael Prosser, Honorary Professorial Fellow, Centre for the Study of Higher Education, University of Melbourne, Australia"You should be inspired to increase the quality of your teaching, your learning, and your learning about teaching."John R. Kirby, Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology, Queen's University, CanadaThe concept of constructive alignment has supported generations of students and teachers within higher education. It is a 'backward design' method of teaching where the student outcomes are identified first and the teacher then designs teaching activities to enable students to achieve those outcomes, assessing how well they have been achieved. Each chapter outlines how to design the learning outcomes, teaching and assessments for success in learning. This updated edition of Teaching for Quality Learning at University:- Provides a comprehensive, research-based theory of teaching for teacher reflection- Outlines how educational technology can be used in constructively aligned teaching- Helps staff developers to provide support for staff and departments in line with institutional policies- Offers a framework for quality assurance and quality enhancement across a whole institutionTeaching for Quality Learning at University continues to be used as a framework for designing higher education teaching systems globally and is essential reading for those in the field.John Biggs has held Chairs in Education in Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong. He has published extensively on student learning and the implications of his research for teaching. He developed his concept of constructive alignment at the University of Hong Kong, first outlined in Teaching for Quality Learning at University in 1999.Catherine Tang has over 15 years of teaching experience in tertiary education and is the former Head of the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Supervision at the Education University of Hong Kong (the then Hong Kong Institute of Education) and the Educational Development Centre at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.Gregor Kennedy is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Melbourne, Australia and a Professor of Higher Education in the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education.ISBN 10: 0335250823ISBN 13: 9780335250820
Teaching for Understanding at University: Deep Approaches and Distinctive Ways of Thinking -Universities into the 21st Century, 14Research into how teaching affects the quality of student learning at university is a rapidly changing field. University teachers are increasingly required to develop their own strategies for effective teaching, often with limited guidance from their institutions. Teaching for Understanding at University not only outlines a wide range of recent developments in the area, but shows how approaches can be brought together to help university teachers think more imaginatively about ways of encouraging students' learning.Written in a way designed to be interesting and accessible to university teachers across disciplines, the volume concentrates on how students reach a personal understanding of the subject they are studying. Covering academic understanding, approaches to teaching, assessment methods and evaluation of teaching, the book provides a comprehensive introduction to the latest ideas on teaching and learning. Avoiding unnecessary jargon and 'business speak', this is the ideal book for the newly qualified lecturer, as well as the more experienced academic who is keen to consider their teaching methods from a fresh perspective.Noel Entwistle is Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of Edinburgh. He was previously the editor of the British Journal of Educational Psychology and Higher Education, and has an international reputation for his work in the field of student learning in higher education.ISBN 10: 0230593852ISBN 13: 9780230593855
